With the retirement of the #22 jersey of 13-year Philadelphia KiXX goalkeeper Peter Pappas coming this Sunday, we take a look at the Top 5 moments of the illustrious goalkeeper's career.
First up is the #5 moment in his career, which came on October 19th, 1996. It was a fall Saturday evening in the City of Brotherly Love, and a brand new soccer franchise was about to play its first-ever game at the CoreStates Center (later named the Wachovia Center) in downtown Philadelphia. The new team was called the KiXX, and in net for them was Philadelphia University graduate Peter Pappas. The young Toronto native was about to play his first professional game for a brand new team, and nerves had to be abundant within the netminder as he stared into the sea of 8096 fans.
Pappas was ultimately able to get over any nerves he had and did a great job of backstopping his new club that night. He withstood the attack of the Detroit Rockers, and Philadelphia's newest team went on to win by a score of 17-12. With the win, a new generation of soccer had hit the city, and the winning side that night would not have to look for a new goalkeeper for 14 years.
